New Australian Citizens Soar by 179,000 This Fiscal Year Up 56%

Over 179,000 people have been awarded Australian citizenship this fiscal year, an increase of 56 percent from last year

There are currently over 80,000 people awaiting Australian citizenship. During the coronavirus pandemic shutdown, over 25,000 people have been conferred citizenship online, the majority from the United Kingdom, China, India, and Pakistan.  Face-to-face ceremonies are not taking place for new citizens ready to pledge to Australia. Local councils can choose whether to conduct the ceremonies online, in-person, or both.

Alan Tudge, the Acting Australian Immigration Minister said, the government is working to begin citizenship testing and interviews in the upcoming weeks so that we can have people moving through all stages of becoming Australian citizens. Council meetings will be conducted to meet protocols of public gathering requirements on crowd numbers in the territories or states, according to Tudge. Online ceremonies will continue for councils unable to hold physical events safely to allow as many as possible to become Australian citizens. Tudge also said the Department of Home Affairs would host online services for anyone not able to attend an in-person ceremony.
